Street Scenes 1970

“Street Scenes 1970” was the result of New York University film students responding to the desire to document the student protests that escalated with the shooting of four students at Kent State University in Ohio. While Martin Scorsese, then officially an instructor at the time, was central to the project, it was Professor Jacqueline Park who was able to provide legitimacy as a student activity. Initially there were to be no individual credits. Inspired by Jean-Luc Godard, what became “Street Scenes 1970” was to be credited collectively to New York Cinetracts.

As a Freshman at the time, I was not active in the filmmaking. My official credit is under Communications. What I actually did was a sometime futile attempt to keep track of who had the 16mm cameras and the Nagra recording equipment, and the locations of the various film crews. There was also one late night where I made a run to the DuArt film lab. While Martin Scorsese has kept the one remaining copy restricted in the Museum of Modern Art, it might be said that in the spirit of the times, “Street Scenes 1970” has occasionally been found to be liberated and available through online sources.
